What to Watch, You NBA Sicko: Feb. 23 - March 1, Pistons Week
The best viewing experiences the NBA has to offer...this week
Monday - February 23
Early Slot: San Antonio Spurs at Detroit Pistons (7:00 PM) Peacock
Game one of the Pistons’ home trilogy will be an excellent measuring stick for the NBA’s newest upstarts. The Pistons’ near wire-to-wire run atop the Eastern Conference has been one of the league’s more underdiscussed surprises, while the Spurs’ rapid ascent into the title picture has been dissected for months. Every regular season question has been answered, and we’re now waiting to see just how much experience really matters in the playoffs. This rematch of the 2005 Finals could also be a Finals preview, just probably for 2027 and beyond.
Late Slot: Utah Jazz at Houston Rockets (9:30 PM) Peacock
Monday kicks off with an elite match-up, is followed by Kings-Grizzlies, and then closes with Jazz-Rockets. While the Jazz will certainly be looking to put their third-best foot forward, the Rockets are functionally in must-win mode the rest of the season. Three through six in the Western Conference are separated by a single game, and while falling to the play-in looks unlikely with the Suns’ unfortunate injury news, securing the three seed will be a huge advantage. The Rockets are coming off a calamitous collapse in New York and need to right the ship, right now.
Tuesday - February 24
Early Slot: New York Knicks at Cleveland Cavaliers (7:30 PM) Peacock
Everyone at the top of the Eastern Conference has been blistering hot over the past month and change, and because of that, the only real way to move up the standings is to win these head-to-head matchups. The Knicks are 37-21, while the Cavaliers are 36-22. A win for the Cavaliers brings them into a tie for third, while a Knicks win creates just a bit of distance and moves them ever closer to the Celtics in second.
Late Slot: Orlando Magic at Los Angeles Lakers (10:30 PM)
Even though the Magic have had a disappointing season, they’re only a half-game out of sixth in the East, and a strong close to the season could see them vault all the way to fifth. Meanwhile, the Lakers, despite a -0.4 net rating, are somehow 34-22 and have a real shot to finish third in the West. Just because you haven’t had the season you wanted, doesn’t mean there isn’t everything to play for. The Lakers and Magic, with a strong finishing kick, can completely flip their season narrative.
Wednesday - February 25
Early Slot: Oklahoma City Thunder at Detroit Pistons (7:30 PM) ESPN
Unfortunately, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Ajay Mitchell are expected to miss this game due to injury, but have no fear, the Thunder are a true-blue death machine. They just beat the Cavaliers 121-113 through sheer force of 3-point shooting, tenacious defense, and friendship. They’ll have their work cut out for them to beat Detroit on the road, but even without their three best ball handlers, they’re still formidable. The Pistons have been up for every contest this season, checking off three wins against the Spurs, Thunder, and Cavaliers is a tall task.
Late Slot: Boston Celtics at Denver Nuggets (10:00 PM)
The Nuggets have been struggling recently, and absolutely need to win this game. While their loss Sunday night to the Warriors came down to a black swan 3-point shooting event– the Warriors went 21-52 from three, without Steph Curry, while the Nuggets shot 8-31 from distance– your record doesn’t contain footnotes about the improbability of certain results. From an entertainment standpoint, these are the league’s two best offenses, which should be a treat after watching the Thunder and Pistons beat the crap out of each other for 48 minutes.
Thursday - February 26
Early Slot: Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers (7:00 PM)
The Heat have been chugging along under the radar for the past few months. They came out of the gates blazing from a pace perspective, but the novelty of their act has worn off. The Sixers have had a roller coaster of a season that has hinged on the health of Joel Embiid and the youth of VJ Edgecombe. However, this game is huge for both. The Heat are only a half-game back from the Sixers in sixth, and with the Magic right there as well, we’re looking at a three-way brawl for one spot to avoid the play-in.
Late Slot: Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Clippers (10:00 PM) Prime
The Clippers might have gutted their roster at the trade deadline, but Kawhi Leonard continues to show that he is one of the ten best players in the world when healthy. The Timberwolves are, by the thinnest of margins, at the bottom of the Western Conference three-through-six dogfight, and need to win every game against teams deemed inferior to them. For as much pearl-clutching as there has been over all of these “uncompetitive games,” as this week of games is showing, a lot of the league has everything to play for over the next six weeks.
Friday - February 27
Early Slot: Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons (7:00 PM) ESPN
The Pistons have not lost three games in a row all season, and have only lost consecutive games twice. I’m not saying that they’re in any real danger of suffering the humiliation of basketball mortality, but this week has those two outcomes firmly on the table. The Cavaliers probably cannot catch the Pistons for the one seed, but they have one of the easiest remaining schedules and two chances to unseat the Pistons. There’s a world where they go 20-4 to close the season and make Detroit sweat, should Detroit ever experience a wobble.
Late Slot: Denver Nuggets at Oklahoma City Thunder (9:30 PM) ESPN
There’s a chance Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell are back for this game, but I’m going to guess they return sometime in early March. As noted before, the Nuggets desperately need to start rattling off wins, which means we should expect their A-game, regardless of who suits up for the Thunder. Now, if SGA is back for this contest, this instantly becomes one of the most intriguing games of the week. Regardless, the Thunder are always excellent at home, and the Nuggets’ defense has been taking on water without Peyton Watson and Aaron Gordon.
Saturday - February 28
Early Slot: Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Hornets (1:00 PM)
The Hornets’ 2026 surge has made them league pass darlings. They’re 16-9 with a net rating of +9.1 since the new year, and look like a threat to overcome a four-and-a-half game deficit to get out of the play-in. The Trail Blazers are 28-30 and ninth in the West, but have the easiest remaining schedule in the league. While they’re in no danger of falling out of the play-in, and have little hope of climbing out of it, they do have a chance to overtake one, or both, of Golden State and Phoenix for seventh or eighth.
Late Slot: Houston Rockets at Miami Heat (3:30 PM) Prime
The Rockets and Heat are on opposite ends of the pace spectrum, which makes this a fascinating matchup. I’m always curious to see who can exert their style onto a game, or if it will balance itself out. Tyler Herro’s return was supposed to boost the Heat’s offense down the stretch, but in his limited minutes this season, they’ve been atrocious, sporting a 109.7 offensive rating. For the Heat to make any noise in the playoffs, they’ll need to get right with Herro on the court, while the Rockets need to stop this season from sliding away.
Sunday - March 1
Early Slot: Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets (3:30 PM) ABC
There’s no telling where these two sides will be in the standings when this game rolls around, but no matter the seeding, this is a huge game. When it’s all said and done, the Nuggets and Timberwolves are very likely to be separated by only a few games, which makes all of their head-to-head matchups doubly important. Throw in their recent history, and Timberwolves-Nuggets is one of my favorite modern mini-rivalries.
Late Slot: Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics (8:00 PM) NBC/Peacock
Trying to guess when Joel Embiid will play is as inexact a science as divination through the reading of entrails. However, if he does play, this will be a game worth watching, aside from the fact that these two fan bases hate each other. An underrated component to the quality of a televised broadcast is the crowd, and I can guarantee the TD Garden will be up for this game. No matter what, when the Celtics play the Sixers, it feels like an event, as if a Sunday night game in prime time wasn’t an event enough.
